“Henry Peach Robinson was perhaps the most influential voice in nineteenth century photography. No other photographer so consistently produced major works of art, was bestowed with so many commendations and medals and was so much a proselytizer of a coherent theory of photographic art … Even more important than his pictures, however, Robinson’s writings stand as the first complete photographic art theory in the English language.” —Robert A. Sobieszek (from his introduction to Robinson’s "Pictorial Effect in Photography")
Working at the end of the Nineteenth Century, photographer Henry Peach Robinson was best known for his zealous, and highly adept, use of combination printing—creating a single image from multiple negatives. He was also an accomplished writer and this short book from 1888 remains one of his most endearing. In practical instruction and personal anecdote, it extols his unyielding belief that capturing the natural beauty of the landscape required the helping hand of props, costumed models, and a spare negative or two. Popular upon its original publication, in today’s era of easy, continuous and nearly limitless digital manipulation, this century-old text resonates again.
This expanded, classic edition has been newly set, carefully edited, and fully optimized for e-book reading. Along with the main text, it includes
• A complete listing of Henry Peach Robinson's published books
• Art and museum suggestions to see Robinson's work
• An extended essay on the author
Letters on Landscape Photography Hol Art Classics Book 3 eBook Henry Peach Robinson
The interesting thing is that the issues we struggle with in photography have not changed and this book is still relavant today. I do wonder if doing landscapes in his time produced better compositions as the process was so technical challenge resulting that you did not click the shutter until they really had something amazing.Product details

Letters on Landscape Photography Hol Art Classics Book 3 eBook Henry Peach Robinson Reviews
This little book, a series of letters written to his friend "on the other side of the water" who has started learning photography, is more intuitive and helpful than all the modern howto books on landscape photography. It is written by one of the best so called "pictorialist" photographers. Here is little taste of it..
---A magnificent view is before us, "palpitating with actuality," but it is beyond our reach. It would be impossible to give any adequate representation of those distant hills they would be dwarfed into insignificance, and, if relied on to come on the same plate as the foreground, over-exposed to the verge of blankness. The foreground is too insignificant in itself to make a picture, and the view, as aview, consists of the valleys and mountains. So we must remember the limitations of our art, and give up the impossible ; but don't pack up the camera, for here comes our picture. Here is a group of children, five of them, gathering bilberries we will give up the mountains for the present, and make a picture of the children.---
this kind of insight is what we seek in books about photography.. not some superficial advice on how to use highlight priority, reverse nd grad filters etc...
in the following pages in order to give adequate representation of the mountain scenery he advises to first expose for the foreground and then the background and combine them in printing.. a primer of hdr..
this book is packed with insightful thoughts on photography as an art, manipulating photos, models, light, the then emerging "values", "zones", choice of subject, control of subject, composition, the technically obsessed photography and even the choice of gear for landscape photography which are still relevant but forgotten today..
a real gem
Robinson's techniques still hold up today
